Chapter 11.

BELLA.

Convincing my father to change the marriage rules for me was going to be harder than I’d let on to Christian and Oliver. I knew that, and they did too. But false confidence and a whole lot of hope was all I had right now.

In truth, I knew my father wanted to do the right thing. After everything he had learned about us, I was sure he regretted many of his previous choices. But blatantly going against tradition was already rocking the boat more than he might want to.

And...and a small part of me wasn’t sure he was going to see it as a battle he wanted to join.

Sure, he had his own issues. He’d loved Mother more than anything and the Council made him give her up simply because she wasn’t what the Council wanted their ruler to marry. And they were of the same species!

More than that, he seemed to approve of Ava and Tavlor, even though Tavlor had mixed blood. Then again, he knew and trusted Tavlor.

Did he trust Christian? I wasn’t sure the ingrained beliefs he grew up with when it came to werewolves were so easily set aside.

Then again, I was willing to try.

The next day I went to work tired but happy. Hope burned through my very soul despite the dire circumstances that seemed to surround me.

Instead, I reminded myself of what I already had and that seemed to do wonders to keep the darkness away. I had a man who loved me, and a group of rebels who wanted me to be a part of their group, who looked at me as capable of offering assistance should they need it.

In a world with so much inequality, I would stand beside those that weren’t as fortunate as I.

I wanted to try to shift the world to make it easily accessible for those left on the outside. I could make a difference. Deep down, I knew I could.

My shift at work went faster than I anticipated, for which I was glad. The last thing I wanted was to wallow in despair or be exhausted because my mind couldn’t stop whirling with potential solutions. But I was able to distract myself easier than anticipated, and by the time my shift was over, I was ready to take on my father.

After work, I went to the Council building to speak to him, moving through the normal amount of security checks as always. Four. Such a drag, and while I knew it wasn’t a waste of time, I couldn’t help but think there had to be a more efficient way of handling this.

By the time I finally reached my father’s office, which he’d converted into an apartment, I was exhausted. The adrenaline I had started the day witht, had been zapped simply by having to prove I wasn’t a threat over and over again.

I collapsed down onto the sofa and magicked up a hot drink for myself. It was quiet in the apartment, too quiet for my liking.
